Public bug reported: I used Hardy 8.04.1 and downloaded the updates immediately after installation, so my Hardy installation was completely up to date.
I can't figure out what the name of the automatic codec search and installation package is, but that is the subject of this bug report. I tried playing a video file in Totem (with the GStreamer backend, the default). The video file had an MKV container, with H264 as the video codec and MP3 as audio and subtitle track as well. Totem GStreamer can't play those out of the box, so the automatic codec search and installation application kicked in. It found the correct codecs and installed them. I don't remember exactly, but after it finished Totem didn't understand that the new codecs were installed, it called for the codec installation application again. I cancelled it, closed Totem, opened Totem again. I tried playing back the video file, which worked. What I expected though, is that Totem doesn't make the mistake to start the codec search and installation application unnecessarily for a second time because it doesn't detect that the codecs were just installed. I assume this is always reproducible, but AFAIK that would mean doing a clean installation of Ubuntu Hardy again, which is rather time consuming. I'd rather not do that unless there is another way to attempt reproduction of the bug. I also experienced this bug with older version of Ubuntu and on my other computers which have Ubuntu installed. I assumed it would certainly be fixed in Hardy LTS because it is such an obvious bug, but apparently it isn't obvious enough to have been noticed. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- codec search searches again after having installed codecs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/250081 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
