Jean-Baptiste, thank you for your comment. I'm afraid that I don't have a non-production system available on which to verify whether this issue still occurs (I'm now using Ubuntu 7.10).
If I understand your suggestion correctly, this should prevent the loop- mounted filesystem from being checked at boot time, thereby preventing the boot failure. To me this is an acceptable work-around, but in my opinion there is still an underlying bug.
