I'm afraid that I don't have a non-production system available on which
to verify whether this issue still occurs (I'm now using Ubuntu 7.10).

If I understand your suggestion correctly, this should prevent the loop-
mounted filesystem from being checked at boot time, thereby preventing
the boot failure. To me this is an acceptable work-around, but in my
opinion there is still an underlying bug.

For this reason I'm not happy to close this report, but won't object if
you decide to do so as the problem may be a bit of a corner case.
