I have the same bug on a 32-bit Compaq Presario 2100 laptop. My wireless is Prism 2.5 Wavelan chipset, driver=hostap. Complete details, includ /var/log/syslog dump while switching from manual to roaming can be found in my ubuntu forums post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=858714.
