Not sure this is directly related, but it's highly reproduceable 
nonetheless.

I installed Ubuntu 6.06.1 as a new server installation from the desktop 
CD (using the 386 desktop kernel) and tried configuring the Atheros card 
by hand, editing /etc/network/interfaces

The modules will be loaded and the card shows the correct configuration 
in iwconfig (essid, key, channel, mode and everything), but doesn't 
associate to the AP unless I try setting the channel manually while DHCP 
is running (iwconfig ath0 channel 6, for example), then the card will 
start changing frequencies, and then finally associates and gets an IP.

Tried this with 2.6.15-26-386 and 2.6.15-27-686
