I have not tested the linux-backports-module yet. But I can confirm that this appears to be resolved in Intrepid Alpha 2. This comment is being posted off the LiveCD using the iwl4965 module. linux-ubuntu-modules is apparently not packaged yet for intrepid, so the firmware has to be manually installed to /lib/firmware. I copied the firmware over, removed the module then modprobed it.
