A reply to the debian bug report (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=476665) gave a good hint. The googleearth-package in ubuntu archives can only install Google earth version 4.2. At first, googleearth-package binary looks for the GoogleEarthLinux.bin in the current folder, if it can't find the file, it downloads the latest one. That is, you can still download the version 4.2 yourself and use googleearth-package to install it. I think it's pretty much the same as running the GoogleEarthLinux.bin in the first place.
