I have sometime this problem @ cold startup, but without any iPod plugged. When I have no icon, no background, etc... at startup, I kill the process launched with "nautilus --no-default-window --sm-client-id default2" command line, and then it restarts OK with the following command "nautilus --sm-client-id 117f000101000121562986900000064200001 --screen 0".
