I have the same issue, with a hp dv6500 Pavilion laptop, a dualcore system. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy, kernel version 2.6.24-19-generic, and acpi 0.09-3ubuntu1, acpid 1.0.4-5ubuntu9 and acpi-support 0.109. The process is called kacpid and it eats 50% CPU (one core). This happens after resuming from hibernate, never otherwise. Can be fixed with a reboot.
