Sorry, My machine was in this state for too long to hang around hoping for a fix. I had to decide to either downgrade to 7.10 or upgrade my hardware. Wanting to keep up to date with Mythbuntu meant upgrading the hardware and I've not had any problems since.
Very frustrating situation to be in though. This kind or problem would send many people straight back to windows.
