OK, after uninstalling flashblock I had two pain-free days with no blank windows.
Today I got tired of all the flash and re-installed a couple of hours ago -- Bingo! now I have a blank window again. So flashblock it is. Also, I noted in my first post that I use pclos (an rpm-based, non- debian-derived distro), so it has nothing to do with ubuntu repos. Too bad, I'll have to find a replacement for that, but nice to have the problem trouble-shot anyhow.
