Thanks for taking the time and reporting this problem and making Ubuntu
better.
You raise two different issues. In order to allow stability the kernel
will not be updated to 2.6.26 in hardy. This might happen in intrepid
though.
Secondly, there is a new restricted package containing newer nvidia
drivers in ubuntu-proposed. You might want to try those and report back
if they are working in order to allow them to be moved to the backports.
