Steps to reproduce this... enter any appointment into Evo's Calendar and set an alarm time. Change to Work Week view. This reproduces the issue 100% of the time.
I do not run Compiz or any effects. If I turn effects on the results are the same. The video driver is nVidia-glx-new 169.12+2.6.24.13-19.44. This is the latest from Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy. My card is a 6600gt series nvidia. Fonts for Evo are standard stock installed versions. The only place to view font selection in Evo is under Mail Preferances/General.. Looking at Message Fonts the check box is checked for "Use the same fonts as other applications". I have unchecked that box as a test. It sets the fonts at Sans 12 and Monospace 12. There was not difference. System fonts as listed under System/Preferances/Appearance/Fonts are all set to Sans as well... Application font is 11, Document font is 10, Desktop font is 10, Window title font is actually Sans Bold 10, Fixed width font Monospace 10.
