Confirming this behaviour on Aspire 6920. After the preview freezes, you can still choose to take pictures and video, but these don't show up. They still are not present after restarting Cheese.
I just checked, and I seem to have a few updates for Gnome components to 2.22.2. I believe 8.04.1 is due sometime today.
