I'm experiencing a similar problem, except with Intel video hardware. Since I upgraded to Hardy, on the first login attempt, it looks like GDM is simply crashing and resets to the login window. I don't see any error messages though. I see a few messages like I usually do when I log out and go back to the login window. It takes 2-3 attempts to finally login.
