I've also experienced this issue. I have a Dell Vostro 400 (my config is
mentioned in a related bug).

I've tried the live cd and etch. I've also tried Kubuntu 8.04, the
latest Debian (4.0 r3 i3), and Fedora Core 9.

It seems the issue is related to something in common between Debian and
K/Ubuntu.

Like others with this issue, I am going to punt back to 7.10.
