Okay, I did a clean install of Hardy (8.04) for an unrelated reason. When I updated to the 2.6.24-19-generic kernel, it worked fine. So moving from 2.6.24-16-generic to 2.6.24-19-generic works for me. I have no idea what this means, but I thought I should report it.
