I guess I figured that it was due to some problem with my file system
(or hard drive).
But to fix your problem, go to directory /var/lib/dpkg/info/
and see if there is a directory by name language-pack-es-base. Delete
the directory by name language-pack-es-base and reinstall the package.

This fixed my problem. Hope this helps you too.
