Erratum : the messages in Xorg.0.log are no longer correlated with the problem: sometimes, the logfile is ok but the problem is there.
More annoying, now the problem appears even when the system wakes up from sleep mode -- that is, even if it was working before falling asleep. It seems to be caused by the "nvidia" module: rmmod'ing it, then insmod'ing it again sometimes solves the problem.
