I have the same problem with a Presario 2199US, which also has the
Radeon Mobility U1. As with Thomas, I get bios, boot messages, and
usplash on the external monitor. Just before GDM comes up, the laptop
LCD goes completely blank (no backlight) for a few seconds; at that
time, the external monitor loses the signal.

If I have booted the machine with the external monitor plugged in,
tty1-6 will display on both the LCD and the external monitor. If I plug
the monitor in after X has started, however, the virtual terminals will
only display on the LCD.

I tried adding the "Virtual 2048 2048" line to xorg.conf (both with and
without the "Depth" and "Modes" lines). This does prevent "xrandr
--output LVDS --left-of VGA-0" from throwing an error, but it does not
produce output on the external monitor. After this command, my desktop
does seem to expand (I can move the mouse off the right edge of the
screen), so it seems like X is convinced that everything is working
correctly. There's just no signal to the external monitor.

This is something of a regression for Ubuntu 6.10, which was previously
on the laptop. There, external monitors were generally able to clone
the LCD, although X would often restart whenever they were plugged or
unplugged. (The details depended on the external monitor, and I was
never able to discern a pattern.)

Please let me know what further information I should add.
