I can confirm this bug. After the last kernel update, compiz goes from
the login screen directly to a completely white screen. Effects are
still working (e.g. if I press Alt+F4, I can see the closing-window-
animation), but no window contents are visible.

This only happens when booting into the newly installed kernel
2.6.24-19. When booting 2.6.24-18, everything works fine. When I disable
compiz in 2.6.24-18 and reboot into 2.6.24-19, everything also works,
but without desktop effects of course.

BTW, I also have an ATI video card (like the original poster), an X300.
Running Xfce and fusion-icon.
