You must then map the XF86Audio* keys to commands to adjust your audio
properties. How you do this is dependent on you window manager.

For xfce, in ~/.config/xfce4/shortcuts/Custom.xml, I have the following:

        <shortcut command="/usr/bin/amixer -q set PCM 2- unmute" 
keys="XF86AudioLowerVolume"/>
        <shortcut command="/usr/bin/amixer -q set PCM 2+ unmute" 
keys="XF86AudioRaiseVolume"/>
        <shortcut command="/usr/bin/amixer -q set PCM toggle" 
keys="XF86AudioMute"/>
