No, the machine requires no authentication to browse the shares. In addition, if I run MS Windows in a virtual machine, it can see and browse the shares flawlessly, so I know that it should be possible. I'm pretty sure that the virtual machine just uses packet forwarding, so any request that it makes, it looks like my computer is making it. It does not have its own IP address.
