I had the same problem on a new install. X would not start when using nvidia-glx-new. Removing nvidia-glx-new and installing nvidia-glx solved the issue.
The problem showed in Xorg.0.log same as the above user. However, when (as part of my trouble shooting) I tried starting X from the command line ( using startx ) I got a more verbose error message. This message indicated that the problem was caused by a mismatch in module version number between the nvidia drive and the installed kernel. ( 2.6.24-19-generic x86_64 ) Sorry I did not keep a copy of the error message. And I don't want to break X to reproduce the error. linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-19-generic 2.6.24.13-19.42 nvidia-glx 1:96.43.05+2.6.24.13-19.42 nvidia-glx-new 169.12+2.6.24.13-19.42 nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1ubuntu8 nvidia-settings 1.0+20080304-0ubuntu1 -- nvidia driver not working in 8.04 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/222899 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
