Now that you mention it, I did use displayconfig-gtk to raise the resolution to 1280x1024.
After commenting out the line and logging out I had the feeling it was zoomed out a little bit more, but I could still only see the top left- hand side corner. I then pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del and got a message along the lines of "The login manager appears to be crashing, attempting another one", which didn't work.
