Issue is probably related to turning the screen off using DPMS (i guess this is used when putting the pc to sleep for the monitor as well). The simple fact is that about 90% of the time, when the screensaver is active and then turns off the screen using DPMS, i won't be able to get my screen back either, much like when waking the pc up after a suspend.
