I have the exact same problem. I have an ATI X800 graphics card and AMD Athlon64 X2, and X won't start. I have tried Ubuntu 5.10 PC, Ubuntu 5.10 64-bit, Kubuntu 6.06 PC, and Kubuntu 6.06 64-bit.
Ubuntu 5.10 gives the error while Kubuntu 6.06 just hangs right before KDE should load. I tried Kubuntu under safe graphics mode, but the exact same problem occurs (it hangs). I am not very tech savvy about Ubuntu or Linux, but Kubuntu is my favorte distribution.
