Public bug reported:

With my Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT, whenever the driver is updated instead
of being able to reboot fine, instead I see the Nvidia driver's splash
screen, filled with artifacts. For some reason, I am also unable to SSH
in when this happens. I am able to use xfix to get the open source
driver working again, and if I use synaptic to uninstall linux-generic,
and then reinstall everything to do with the Nvidia drivers, and then
install linux-generic again, it appears to work.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
