I did this:
sudo apt-get remove sun-java*
sudo apt-get remove openjdk*
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-jdk
sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun
Which resulted also in the removal of Netbeans. I tried installing it
but got errors similar to the following:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo apt-get install netbeans
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.

So then I did this:
sudo apt-get remove sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-jdk
sudo apt-get autoremove
and got this:

unixodbc odbcinst1debian1

then I did this:
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-jdk

+ perform it. It is only by accident that I specified that inmformation.

sudo apt-get install netbeans
And got the above error message. I'm rather certain from all of this that I
broke it, but I'm not absolutely sure. I only got into this mess because of
trying to make Java applets work inside Firefox3, as described here:
