no, i don't think it was a bug after all. the first time i tried removing the trash bins from the panel after the reboot required by the updates, i did not succeed. but after another reboot, i could remove (and add) items on the gnome panel. before today's updates, i a problem similar to that of bug 49594. so the updates must have taken care of the bug.
