Some more information ; on the net I found the following trick :
in file "/etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc" in section [X-*-Greeter] I added the following 
line
NumLock=On

Now when kdm (my logging manager) displays the logging window the led is
on as expected BUT if I log out and I log in again the led is not on ;
so there is still something wrong.

Another problem : there is no way to set "NumLock=On" in file
"/etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc" by using the setting od connections in KDE which
is against the philosophy of KDE.

As for the time being I cannot log in a Gnome session due to another bug
I cannot tell wether the led would be on in these conditions.
