Try go to ubuntuforums.org and try to download/open a text .txt attachment.
Example: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=828399

Click on listings.txt to download it, the firefox download manager
(window "opening listings.txt") pops up and choose "open with" "Text
editor"

The resulting error is:
Download error
/tmp/listings.txt could not be opened, because the associated helper 
application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.
