Tristan: yes, I set the computer's timezone also to Europe/Amsterdam. I got things working though. I use wicd on this computer in stead of networkmanager (problems with an atheros adapter in NM). I was using the wired connection, which was not the default connection. Because of this, after log in, there was no internet connection until I selected the wired interface. After changing the wired connection to default, the weather information shows up automatically after reboot.
