"apt-get source dmraid" will only download the old, original tar-ball that was used for the old package. And to get all needed extra packages, do "sudo apt-get build-dep dmraid" first. Once you have applied the ubuntu diff on the upstream tar-ball, you can try building with "debuild -b -i -us -uc".
