The same happened here. Only that I found out about it another way:
Totem played very slowly (1 frame/sec) the videos and had no sound (also
music seemed to play especially slowly). Mplayer was either affected,
but VLC seemed to play the videos in a normal speed (though no sound
came out). Then I found out that if I don't have youtube pages open in
firefox, the problem goes away...
I have Hardy Heron in a Toshiba laptop, which has some kind of an Intel
integrated sound chip.
