I don't think its the same problem like mine, but the topic fits.
Update-Manager needs a password after clicking check-button.

If you click "cancel" in the pwd-dialog, it rescans for updates, too. Whats the 
difference about using a pwd or clicking "cancel" ?
Why you need a pwd to check for updates?

IMHO a pwd-request is only usefull after clicking "install".
