i've since recreated the USA2/crd keyboard, added it under layouts and
set it as default...it appears as the default but doesn't seem to be the
default, it doesn't work. every time i boot i get the same bug message,
and when i rebuild the crd keyboard when i saved it in us and made the
other relevant changes, each time i got the bug error. when i added the
variant

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xkb/rules/base.xml

<variant>
 <configItem>
  <name>crd</name>
  <description>Coeur D'Alene Salish</description>
 </configItem>
</variant>

i got the bug message. when i edited the base.lst

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xkb/rules/base.lst
from:

! variant
 euro us: With EuroSign on 5
 intl us: International (with dead keys)
 alt-intl us: Alternative international (former us_intl)
 colemak         us: Colemak
