Stefan, sorry I need to read the comments more carefully in the future. Well I don't know a proper way to call a pdf-viewer either. Also after having had a look at the available unbiased pdf-viewer alternatives, xpdf is probably not all that bad. Although the evince-gtk package is independent of Gnome and has more features than xpdf. But anyway this is not really an issue. And xpdf being the currently the least weighted viewer, it's probably just as well as putting this in the 'recommended' section.
