More info. After the incident and its fix, I had the automatic run of fsck on the 30th login - and it failed. It seemed to need to do a lot of fixing on the filesystem.
I am reminded of a problem that another OS used to have - it would switch off the power before everything had been written out to disk. Could this be happening here? Dunno.
