It is also possible to back-port the bugfix to the kernel used by ubuntu with
the following steps:
1. install the kernel source package and unpack it
2. edit the top-level Makefile of the Linux kernel to match the version of the
installed kernel
3. apply the patch from the attachment.
4. run "make modules"
5. replace the r8169.ko driver from /lib/modules/... with the one from the
drivers/net/ directory of the linux source tree
6. run mkinitramfs to replace the driver in the initrd
That did the trick for me. Hopefully this bugfix will make it into the next
ubuntu kernel update.
