I experienced this issue as well when accessing a Windows XP Pro SP3 machine from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. Disabling simple file sharing on the XP box (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874) resolved the issue and I can now access both shared drives and C$, D$, etc.
