I had the same problem on a laptop with radeon 9000 WITH ANOTHER SOLUTION (See 
the following bugreport to compiz)

then got the following answer:

This is a modification made by Ubuntu that is not in the up-stream version of
compiz-manager.

Use SKIP_CHECKS to work around it.

(And feel free to poke Ubuntu for this. (hi mvo/travis :p))
