Even on my notebook, after a kernel upgrade and a reboot, I was unable to use the wireless nic (ipw2200). The reason was that linux-ubuntu- modules was not upgraded with the new kernel. I was forced to reboot with the old kernel and manually install the missing package. For a newcomer or a Windows user this is a "show stopper".
