I'm having the exact same issue.

I'll try and include a screen shot showing that the icon is actually
there, but seems to be broken or very small.  Here's what the clip
shows:

1. I first show that the trash icon is not visible in the bottom panel by right 
clicking and highlighting the empty trash icon.
2. I remove it and create a new panel on the right side of the screen.  (note i 
selected a small portion of the screen to limit size of ogg).
3. I add the trash app to the new right panel.
4. I change the back ground color of the panel to get a really good idea of 
where the trash icon is.  You'll see it as a thin line that updates slightly 
slower than the background color.
5. After some effort on my part (trying to find the location), I am able to 
then show the proper right clicking menu, revealing the trash applet is indeed 
there.

Hope this helps.  My lspci is as follows:

~$ lspci | grep VGA
00:05.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C51 [Geforce 6150 Go]
