Correction to my previous post: the system doesn't respond to key and
mouse presses, but the mouse cursor still moves.

Another thing I noticed:

- with Compiz enabled: the above happens (no key +mouse press possible, mouse 
movement possible, desktop still visible), but I can reboot the system with a 
CTRL-ALT-SYS RQ + B
- with XFCE compositor instead of compiz: display goes black with strange 
patterns and reboot with CTRL-ALT-SYS RQ + B not possible (only the power 
buttons helps)

I'm running without compositor for a while to see if the problem still
occurs...

Could this be related to the intel video driver? (my laptop has a intel
i915 chip on board).
