@Jason Roth: Thanks for the offer. I did get back to a working nvidia proprietary driver by finding a repository which still has linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-16 and installing it, then going to the hardware control app and checking the box to be sure it was activated. Once I re-copied my xconf.org file with "nvidia" as the driver setting and restarted X I was back in business :-) Pretty stressful though. I took note of the locations of the the two key files the nvidia installer installs and when I next attempt this upgrade I will back up these locations. The kernel module is nvidia.mod.o and the X module is nvidia_drv.so (remember to do an updatedb , then use the locate command to tell you where to find them)
