It isn't broken so I am closing this report. Xv normally uses overlay output which directly sends the image to video card memory so gnome screenshot couldn't capture it ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_video_extension#The_Disadvantages_of_Chroma_Keying ) Windows has the same problem. This issue shouldn't appear with textured video (Bug #213532) but it isn't usable right now at least on i915 hardware and according to some bug reports on i965 too (Bug #152206). You could of course use X11 output per default but it needs much cpu and has huge pixel. Thanks for reporting and don't hesitate to submit bug reports in the future.
