I myself have the same problem on my university network (unsecured, no
WEP, no WPA) and it was always working correctly at home (WPA on a
Linksys WRT54g).

Booting the old 7.10 kernel (2.6.22-14) made everything work, but there
the ipw3945 driver was used, so that's probably not very useful.

Compiling the latest compat-wireless tar ball (2008-06-03) fixed the
problem. An earlier version (2008-04-29) did not fix it. This driver
reports as version 1.2.26k.

Can some of the kernel maintainers comment on this please? It seems to
affect quite some people and in my opinion would definitely warant a fix
before the next Ubuntu release (especially considering that this is a
regression, as it worked in 7.10).
