OK, here is what I've found:
* After a reboot, there is a /usr/bin/pulseaudio process running under my user
name. It is apparently not running as a daemon, because my configuration had
"daemonize = no" in it (as reported by pulseauido --dump-conf).
* After suspend/restart, this process is still there, but sound doesn't work.
* I can kill this process, and sound still doesn't work.
* I can then restart a pulseaudio process by running pulseaudio --D, but sound
doesn't come back.
* I also tried logging out/in (which also killed pulseaudio and restarted as
non-daemon process), but sound didn't come back.

* For a second run, I rebooted, killed the pulseaudio process, and tested
sound, which works fine without pulseaudio running (I also verified no
pulseaudio process was started when I started playing the sound).
* Then I did a suspend/restart.
* No pulseaudio process reappeared. Sound does not work.
* Starting pulseaudio didn't help either.

>From this set of tests, I don't think pulseaudio is probably the
problem... Any other ideas?
