The problem is related to the audio driver, although I would not
understand why. On an HP Compaq nc6000 equipped with an Intel
Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM audio card, this feature works well on
Feisty and Hardy. Yet on an HP Compaq 6510b or 6910p, using Pulse Audio
for all sound services, when I run the "Preferences/Sound - Sound
Capture" test, I hear for 1s the audio, then noise come along quickly,
then silence. But as previously stated, if I record the audio, it
records flawlessly.

nc6000 audio device: 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel
Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller
(rev 03)
