I'm the user on IRC. Now that I can actually report it instead of swearing incoherently, here's what I found:
Booting Kubuntu 8.04 LiveCD. Asus M2N4-SLI (latest stable bios), AMD 64 X2 5000+ 65w, 2x1024mb 800mhz Kingston ValueRAM, GeForce 9600GT. Trying just to boot - KERNEL PANIC. Exactly the same as original poster. Trying to boot with noapic added - modprobe crashes, system won't load.
